Here it is, the first post of 2012. Now that you've recovered from that wave of excitement, earlier today I also did my first time trial of 2012. It seems as though not much has changed. At the end of the 2011 season, I vowed to train smarter, avoiding all of the overtraining based mishaps of last year, during which I often had amazing form when not competing, yet suffered from illness or injury whenever I was competing. So then, predictably, after weeks of powering around Surrey like a train, whilst reminding myself of the importance of recovery, I had high hopes for 2012. Then, low and behold, on wednesday I woke up with a sore throat, and despite constant rest, has worsened since.
Today was a nice day for cycling. The season has to start somewhere, and despite my condition, today's course, weather and general atmosphere were a nice welcome to the season.
The effort itself mainly consisted in flooding the 19 mile hilly course with phlegm, mucus and various other beings which chose to inhabit my lungs, and consequently my time was average, bordering poor. (Might I also add, not wishing to make excuses or anything, but i also lost more than 30 seconds waiting at a junction for the blue rinse brigade and the angry HGV convoy which was left in their wake.)
Apart from my performance and the many excuses it has produced, it was good to have the focus and drive which can only be achieved with a number pinned on your back again.
So now i'm sat with a cup of tea on the brink of death, but I think it has been worthwhile. Oh and by the way, if none of that made much sense, it's because I have man-flu, so leave me alone.
